A show I’ve been hosting at Denver Open Media for over 2 years, is called Vlog TV. People call in and request their favorite online videos. We go live every Thursday night at 10pm, on Comcast Channel 56. The show gives the community in Denver a chance to share the videos they enjoy or created. The content online is so different from what we see on TV everyday. We get all kinds of requests, it’s hard for me to describe because it’s always so different. If you see a video you like that was requested on the show, go to the website www.vlogtvlive.com. There’s a pool of good videos, that can easily be shared with friends and family.

S.O.S is a Youth Video Production Group at Denver Open Media. I started two years ago with Ann Theis, during my Studio internship. The program is free to any youth, middle to high school age. I volunteer to teach them how to use all the studio, field, and editing equipment/technique. We also teach media literacy, video blogging, and TV production. Once a month the youth create a live TV show, focusing on social justice issues. The group meets every Wednesday from 3:30pm – 6:00pm, and goes live the third Wednesday of every month.

DOM Acknowledges Sacha Heppell
VLOG TV, Channel 56, Thursdays, 10pm
How did you begin producing videos?
My passion for video production started at the age of 15. I found Deproduction online and got started with them immediately, volunteering for the Deproduction drive-in. I also took their classes, for editing and field equipment. Then they started DOM and I started producing my own shows there. But I’ve always made videos in my spare time with friends.
What is the message of your show?
The show idea was actually suggested by Ann Theis. She started it at MNN in New York and wanted to continue it here so I decided to join her. It’s about uniting the worlds of online video with cable TV. People in Denver call-in and request their favorite online video and we play it for them on the spot, and discuss why they like it.
What do you do outside of producing videos?
I like to dance, meditate, and exercise. I think about the videos I’m working on and what I could start working on next.
How do you prepare for your show?
Well, I usually go online and pick a couple videos that will grab people’s attention to start off the show. I also set-up all the equipment and make sure Ann is happy.
Why is your voice important?
Because I have the power to change someone’s perspective on any issue I choose to care about. I love entertaining people, and at DOM I’m given the chance to entertain in a way that people will take seriously.
What is your advice to aspiring producers?
Never give up! Keep moving forward with your shows. It will be hard at times and you will get to points where you find yourself stuck, but if you can stick to it and find ways around those obstacles, that’s when your show will really blossom! It’s a learning experience, just learn from your mistakes as you go and you’ll have a great show!
Why is public access important? Why do you enjoy producing public access content?
Now that everything is digital, it takes fewer hands to create a video. Traditional TV is talking to the masses but here we talk to the community so we have a great advantage! I enjoy producing public access content, especially here in Denver because our community is so diverse and I learn so much from all the different people I work with. Public access is one of the best ways to communicate any message to the community.

Jesse Cordova, came to me with a holiday song dedicated to the men and women serving our country. The song, created by solo artists Andrew and Daniel Salano was formed into a video. Jazz Copeland and Roe Moore are the professional actors. I planned, shot, and edited this using equipment from Denver Open Media.
In 2007, I created this for the Own Your C High School Video Contest, it won first in the health cattegory, and I recieved a check of $1000.

Sherry Holland is a Film Producer from Texas, who relocated to Denver. I met her at Denver Open Media, after speaking for a short time I invited her to co-host Vlog TV with me. After the show we talked about new shows we could create in Denver. She proposed the idea of a Dating Show, called Love Smack. She made arrangements for us to shoot at Club Theorie, a nightlife venue downtown. Our plan was to interview young locals about their dating horror story, and give advice for other couples who might find themselves in a similar situation. We would also have an entertainment segment where the host, Sherry along with the DJ, would play dating games live.
Sherry ended up moving to Florida for a dream job with Interscope. The idea for the show is still together but unfortunately the show will not be complete. We might come back to it in the future, but only time will tell.
